MiCA Year Two: What Actually Changed for European Crypto

Two years into MiCA, Europe has become the most predictable crypto jurisdiction in the world. Exchanges, stablecoin issuers and investors are still recalibrating.

From uncertainty to a working rulebook

MiCA has moved from a policy document into daily reality for European exchanges, custodians and stablecoin issuers. Licensing pipelines are cleared, passporting works and enforcement priorities are broadly understood.

For many operators, that predictability alone is worth more than any single tax or capital treatment.

Stablecoins under the microscope

The stablecoin regime has driven the most visible market structure change. Euro-denominated stablecoins have grown meaningfully while several offshore-issued dollar stablecoins remain restricted for European retail.

That shift has created a real opening for compliant issuers and for banks piloting tokenized deposits.

What still needs work

DeFi, NFTs and staking sit outside the current MiCA perimeter and are being debated for a second phase. The consultation is likely to define much of the next European crypto cycle.

Frequently asked questions

Does MiCA apply to DeFi protocols?
MiCA in its current form largely excludes fully decentralized protocols, but a second consultation phase is expected to address DeFi, NFTs and staking.
Can non-EU exchanges serve European users under MiCA?
Non-EU exchanges must generally obtain authorization and passport into member states through a licensed EU entity to serve European retail clients.
